I am an HIV/AIDS Consultant and Educator, a former Board Certified Family Medicine Physician, now retired, after working 21 years as the Director of HIV Services for a Kaiser Permanente Hawai'i, and after doing 45 years of direct patient care. I am currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.  I do occasional lectures and HIV clinical consulting work. I sold my solo private practice in Denver, Colorado in 1992 to move to Hawai'i. I graduated from University of Denver, Denver, Colorado with a B.S. in Zoology, with minors in chemistry and music (pipe organ) and received my M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana. I did my family practice residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

I am a member of the Hawai'i HIV/AIDS Physician's Consortium and the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care. as well as the American Academy of HIV Medicine. I am medical director of AIDS Education Project here in Hawaii which is part of the Aids Education and Training Centers.  I am also a member of the Hawai'i Academy of Family Physicians and am twice past President of that organization. In addition, I am a member of the Hawai'i Medical Association and I am a member of the American Medical Association.  I continue to teach and lecture occasionally on all aspects of HIV/AIDS nationally and internationally.  I have been in medical practice for over 45 years and I have cared for innumerable gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and have had the largest HIV/AIDS practice (over 650 patients) in the state of Hawai'i for many years.  I have over 36 years experience in HIV care and have done and research in HIV disease.  I have many published journal articles on all aspects of HIV care.  I have cared for HIV/AIDS patients since the very beginning of the epidemic.  I have previously been on the Board of the American Academy of HIV Medicine and have served on the boards of a number of AIDS service organizations.


 

In addition, I hold a Master of Divinity degree.  I am an ordained former Episcopal Priest and now Orthodox Archpriest of the Inclusive Orthodox Church (www.inclusiverorthodox.org) here in Honolulu.  I am active in liturgical, pastoral and healing ministry especially to the gay, lesbian and transgender community and to those persons living with HIV/AIDS.  I lecture nationally and internationally on the Spiritual Aspects of HIV Care and Chronic Illness as well as HIV in the Elderly.  I also lecture on the Meaning of Medicine and Physician Burnout.  I conduct workshops on all aspects of HIV care as well as Spirituality and Medicine.
